Why You Should Change The Locks On Your New Home

No matter how many times you have moved home in the past the experience is much the same for every one, a lot of stress and a lot of excitement. Due to all the commotion it is easy to overlook one vital home security measure, changing the door locks! Although it may not seem like a big deal changing your door locks should be one of the top things on your to do list, for one simple reason, you can never be sure how many copies of the keys were made and who may be in position of them!

Home Office Statistics

  • Chances of a burglary at your property within the first twelve months of moving in are almost doubled when compared to the average burglary rate. (4.6% compared to 2.5%)

  • When compared to people that have occupied their property for ten years or more the statistics show that you are almost three times as likely to get burgled. (4.6% compared to 1.6%)

  • Homeowners that take no home security measures are shockingly ten times more likely to get burgled then those that take simple home security measures such as upgrading door and window locks! (22.5% compared to 2.5%)

Who Has A Key To Your Property?

Every year around 37,500 properties will change hands and shockingly most homeowners are completely oblivious to the fact that there is likely to be at least one set of keys to their new home will still be in circulation. NOP conducted a survey which revealed that over 58% of British homeowners hand over a spare key to their property to a trusted friend or relative.

Halifax Home Insurance conducted a different survey and the results showed that a whopping twelve million adults have lost their house keys up to six times within the last ten years and never bothered to get the locks changed!

If you don’t change the locks when you move into a new property or after losing a set of keys then you can never be completely confident that your home is secure. Another thing to take into consideration is the fact that if you do become victim to a break in then there are some insures that wont process your claim as you never changed the locks to the property when you first moved in so in their eyes you haven’t taken enough steps to ensure your property is secure.

By changing your locks and upgrading them to more secure locks then not only will you have peace of mind that you know exactly who has a key to your property but you will also know that you have improved your home security measures so that you and your family can feel a lot more safe and secure in your new home.
